breaking free – a yemeni woman’s tale

through sunny days and moony nights, she prays
to break away from the customs set forth,
holding her back and preventing her
from the countless opportunities she has always dreamed of.

when she looks upon other women in life,
she feels for their victory, always celebrating their success.
but little does she have that same support
within her heart, these same dreams ignite.

her eyes, like sun rays on glass, gleam with hope
that one day she will see herself in the same place
as the very women she applauds and cheers for.
until then, she sits and waits.

counting the days she will break free, without restraint
and show the doubters what she is capable of.

she gazes upon the birds soaring high above,
their wings painting strokes of freedom across the sky.
her spirit, like a gentle breeze, whispers its desires to do the same,
but societal norms weigh down her dreams like sandbags.

she dreams of traveling to distant lands and exploring new horizons,
discovering the borders beyond her homeland.
she dreams of knowledge, her thirst for truth and wisdom
fierce and unconfined can only be restrained and denied.

her voice, like a melody that longs to be heard
to tell stories that pass from time and time.
but the cage of silence stifles her words and she holds back
her tongue, forcing her thoughts from ever speaking out loud.

she craves to walk beside a chosen love, a love that is her own,
untethered from the woven threads of arranged marriages and talk.
but marriage bargains bind, like gloves,
reducing love’s dance to mere embrace.

her longing to be free is a gentle plea, an earnest desire to break free from the chains that have bound generations of women before her.
yet within her, a spark of defiance glimmers,
a quiet rebellion against the oppressive norms that seek to define her.

she yearns to rise like the morning sun, illuminating her darkness
with her strength and resilience.
she dreams of a future where the expectations of society no longer dictate her life, where her wings are no longer confined.

with each passing day, her dreams burn brighter like flames
she knows that the road to freedom will be long and windy,
but she is determined to find a way
for she believes her dreams are worth the journey.

and as she gazes upon the horizon, she knows that one day
she will break from the confines of society’s expectations
and embrace the expanse of her own being.
